Matthew Redhead interviewed in the Guardian about Iran’s clandestine use of criminal gangs

In a fascinating analysis of Iran’s history of clandestine attacks, and recent attacks in Australia, Guardian international security correspondent Jason Burke interviewed SOC ACE researcher Matthew Redhead.

Matthew says that while we don’t have the full details on the attacks yet, Australia must be confident of Iran’s involvement to have made a public accusation. He says such actions are a cheap and deniable way for Iran to fight its undeclared war, and impress its supporters in the Middle East.

He adds, such Iranian activity ‘smacks of desperation’, and also of ‘signalling’ it is still able to act, but ‘we shouldn’t get overexcited about their capabilities’.
